Memorable Manitobans: Kay Tsang “Randy” Woo (1944-2010)

Restauranteur.

Born at Kwangtung Province, China in 1944, he and his mother immigrated to Canada in 1967, settling at North Battleford, Saskatchewan where he worked for his brother Wally Woo in the restaurant business. In 1968, he relocated to Winnipeg, and in 1970 married Sally, with whom he went on to have two children.

In 1970, the couple took over the operation of the Marigold Restaurant on St. Mary's Road. In 1980, they opened Chinatown Marigold on King Street and he spent the next 26 years there. For many years, the restaurant was the focal point of Chinatown. It was a place for family and friends to gather and celebrate every type of occasion. In 1999, he was given the Golden Dragon Award, recognized as Citizen of the Year in the Winnipeg Chinese community.

He died at Winnipeg on 14 March 2010.
