Memorable Manitobans: Chiu Ming “CM” Wong (1935-2014)
Chemist. Born at Guangzhou, China on 8 July 1935, he fled to Hong Kong in 1949. He came to Canada where, in 1964, he received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of New Brunswick then completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. He came to the University of Manitoba where, over the course of 27 years, he taught chemistry and conducted research leading to the development of anti-cancer medicines. He spent 10 years teaching in China at the invitation of the Chinese government. He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He retired in 1993 and died on 27 October 2014.
