Memorable Manitobans: George Walter Winckler (1844-1926)

Civil engineer, preacher.

Born in India on 2 December 1844, where he worked as a civil engineer and lay preacher, he emigrated with his family to England around 1884 where they stayed until 1893, when they emigrated to Winnipeg where he continued his engineering and religious work. An adherent of the Anglican faith, he gave lectures on Main Street, opposite the city post office, on such themes as “God’s conditions of living forever,” “Conditional immortality,” “Hades (hell),” “Future life only in Christ,” “The resurrection from the dead” and “If a man die, shall he live again.” He also championed a number of unpopular causes, including Prohibition and the non-vaccination of children.

He and wife Fannie Ruth Auding (1859-1907) had five children: Rosh (b India, 1882), Becher (b India, 1884), Ozni (b England, 1885), Naomi (b England, 1892), and Ira (b Winnipeg, 1895). He served as the Recording Secretary of the Manitoba Historical Society from 1897 to 1904, and the Secretary of the Winnipeg Humane Society in the early 1900s.

In July 1904, he moved to Collingwood, Ontario seeking an improvement in his health. He later went to Toronto, where he died on 30 June 1926 and was buried in Collingwood.
