Hockey coach.
Born at Winnipeg on 13 January 1934, he became an All-American while attending the University of Minnesota in 1959.
He went on to a career in coaching, leading the US national teams at multiple world championships and the US Olympic hockey teams in 1968 and 1972. The 1972 squad received a silver medal in Sapporo, Japan. He was instrumental in founding the Midwest Junior Hockey League-today's United States Hockey League-and coached the first US National Junior Team in 1973.
For his lifelong contributions to the sport of hockey, he was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame, Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (2009), Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame, and University of Minnesota Hall of Fame, and he received the Hobey Baker Legend of College Hockey Award (2005).
He died at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 15 September 2025.
