Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Buchanan Reginald Westgate (1872-1951)

Cleric, missionary.

Born at Watford, Ontario in 1872, he graduated from Huron College at London, Ontario in 1896 after which he was ordained a deacon and priest in the Anglican faith. He worked as a missionary in Paraguay (1898-1901) and German East Africa (1902-1919), being interned by the Germans during the First World War. He returned to Canada after the war and, in 1920, was appointed field secretary of the MSCC and secretary to the Indian and Eskimo commission. He held the post until retirement around 1944. He died at Winnipeg on 12 August 1951 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
