Memorable Manitobans: Mary Jane “Jennie” Watt (1867-1933)Women’s leader. Born in Woodstock, Ontario, she came west to Birtle, Manitoba, with her husband in 1892. She was secretary of the Birtle Women’s Institute when it was organized in 1910, later serving as president until she became provincial president of Women’s Institutes. Subsequently she was elected the national president, in which capacity she promoted a women’s exhibit at the CNE in Toronto. She was awarded an honorary diploma in home economics by the Manitoba Agricultural College in 1926. She is a member of the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame.
