Memorable Manitobans: Edward A. “Ed” Walkow (1922-2006)

Railwayman, community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 February 1922 to Nicholas Walkow (c1892-1971) and Frances P. Dubowits (1901-1991), he was a Motive Power Supervisor at the Canadian National Railway from 1940 to 1987. During that time, he also served in the Royal Canadian Navy (1942-1945). He sat on the board of directors at the Entegra (Holy Spirit) Credit Union for over 42 years and was board president for 33 years.

He loved sports and in later life supported the Winnipeg Jets in hockey, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in football, and the Winnipeg Goldeyes in baseball. His other interests included fishing, stamp collecting, music, travelling, and DIY repairs. With his wife Jan he had four children.

He died at Winnipeg on 4 April 2006 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
