Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Alexander Wade (1848-1898)

Engineer, civil servant.

Born at Stoneleigh, Yorkshire, England on 19 November 1848, eldest son of Thomas Wade, he worked as a civil engineer on railways and public works in Ontario until 1879 when he came to Manitoba and was appointed Deputy Minister of Public Works. He served as a member and chairman of the Civil Service Board. During the 1885 North West Rebellion, he joined the Winnipeg Light Infantry, serving under General Strange at Frenchman’s Butte, and received the Imperial medal. He died at Santa Anna, California on 19 October 1898.
