Memorable Manitobans: Donald “Don” Tomlin (1921-2006)

Chartered accountant.

Born at Winnipeg on 22 September 1921 to Christian and Albert Tomlin, he joined the company Miller MacDonald in 1939 on his way to becoming a Chartered Accountant. He also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (1942-1946). In 1947, he qualified for the National Honours list as a C.A. In 1954, Miller MacDonald merged with Deloitte, Haskins and Sells, where Tomlin remained until his retirement in 1985.

On 4 June 1949 he married June Gunn (1926-1987) of Transcona. Through the next 17 years they led an active family and social life in Winnipeg. At their cottage at Victoria Beach he enjoyed sailing, golf, cycling, and cross-country skiing. His other activities included teaching at the University of Winnipeg, serving on the executive of several clubs, and assisting numerous charities. In 1966 and 1967, he served as President of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 1972 the couple moved to Toronto, Ontario where he was involved in Canada’s Challenge for the America’s Cup. He continued to play golf, and also became a member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and the Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

He died at Toronto, Ontario on 27 September 2006.
