Memorable Manitobans: Americo Tome (?-2012)

Grocer, community activist.

Born at Amieira, Portugal, son of Antonio Tome and Maria Lurdes, he was one of the first Portugese immigrants to Manitoba, arriving in 1957. At first, he worked at INCO in northern Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg in 1962. He and his wife opened the city's first Portugese grocery store, at 477 William Avenue. It operated at several places through the years, including as Americo's Supermarket at 930 Notre Dame Avenue. He was a founding member of the Portugese Association of Manitoba (1966). He died unexpectedly on 19 April 2012, on a visit to Portugal.
