Memorable Manitobans: Henry Rowland Tolton (1868-1966)

Farmer, municipal official.

Born in Bruce County, Ontario in 1868, he came to the vicinity of Oak Lake in 1891. There he farmed and bred purebred Shorthorn cattle until retirement in 1919. He and wife Elizabeth Ann Stevens (?-1960) had six children: James Harvey Tolton, Henry Gordon Tolton, Norman Ernest Tolton, Bessie Lavina Tolton (wife of ? Pound), Ella Corabelle Tolton (wife of R. J. Crosbie), and Lillian May Tolton (wife of W. G. Smith). He served as a councillor (six years) and Reeve (1916-1917) for the Rural Municipality of Woodworth, and President of the Oak Lake Agricultural Society. He was a member of Kenton Baptist Church and, later, Broadway First Baptist Church in Winnipeg where he served on the Board of Deacons for 35 years. He died at Brandon on 7 September 1966 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
