Memorable Manitobans: Leslie Rielle Thomson (1886-1958)

Civil engineer.

Born at Toronto, Ontario on 12 January 1886, son of Thomas C. and M. E. B. Thomson, he was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. In 1907, he was a demonstrator on the university staff then came to Winnipeg in 1910 where he worked as an engineer. He was a member of the Chi Delta Psi Fraternity, AF & AM, and Anglican church. His recreation was sailing.

Munitions assistant to C. D. Howe in the wartime department of Mines and Munitions. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire and US Medal of Freedom with Gold Palm for his work in the development of the atomic bomb.

He died at Guelph, Ontario on 27 April 1958 and was buried at Cimetière Mont-Royal in Outremont, Quebec.
