William Stephen

Farmer.
Born in Scotland on 6 March 1835, he came to Canada in 1870 with his wife Jane McKenzie (1825-1912) and their two daughters: Elizabeth Black Stephen (1863-1944, wife of ? Bennett) and Jeannie Stephen (1865-1948, wife of Frederick Albert Sanford). in the early 1880s, he established a farming colony near Virden that was supported financially by his cousin, Sir George Stephen (1829-1921). It fell short of its lofty goals but succeeded in more subtle and long-lasting ways. He served as President of the Virden Agricultural Society. He died on 21 August 1906 and was buried in the Virden Cemetery.
