Memorable Manitobans: John Spencer (1849-1932)

Businessman.

Born at Great Billing, England on 6 January 1849, he farmed at Lavendon, Buckinghamshire and had four children with his wife Mary Ann Hannah (?-1887). In 1880, the family immigrated to Canada and farmed near Emerson. After the death of his wife, his sons took up homesteads in Saskatchewan while he and his daughter moved to Winnipeg about 1901. He was the founding Secretary and Treasurer, in 1906-1907, of the Grain Growers’ Grain Company, predecessor to United Grain Growers. He retired to Victoria, British Columbia but visited family members in Saskatchewan during summers. He died at Craik, Saskatchewan on 1 May 1932 and was buried in the cemetery there.
