Memorable Manitobans: Archibald Speers (1830-1901)

Livestock dealer.

Born on 12 September 1830, he was well known throughout Canada as a livestock dealer, being in the mid-1860s the most prominent cattler dealer in the country. He was the first man to export cattle from Canada to Great Britain, via New York, in 1874. He was engaged with the Winnipeg firm of Gordon Ironsides and Fares for some years and worked until shortly before his death. He had three sons: Charles Wesley Speers, Archibald Rolston Speers (1858-1931), and Frederick H. Speers, the latter two of whom also worked as livestock dealers. He died at Wetaskiwin, North West Territories [now Alberta] on 22 August 1901 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery.
