Memorable Manitobans: Josiah Wesley “Joe” Snyder (1876-1951)

Brickmaker.

Born in Dundas County, Ontario on 25 October 1876, brother of Charles Adam Septimus Snyder and John Alexander “Alex” Snyder, he was educated at Mossburg, Ontario. He came to Portage la Prairie and played a role in building many of the buildings along Saskatchewan Avenue. He and his brothers founded the Snyder Brothers Brickyard.

In 1908, he married Mabel Caroline Robertson (1878-1936) at Regina, Saskatchewan and they had two sons: James Gordon Snyder (1909-1962) and Alva Robertson Snyder (1915-1985). He was an alderman (1932-1942) and Chair of the Board of Works, and was responsible for planting 15,000 trees around the city. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Bricklayers Union.

He died at his Portage la Prairie home on 15 March 1951 and was buried in the St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery.
