Meteorologist.
Born at Rossburn on 24 September 1925, son of Arthur G. Smith and Edith Smith (c1890-1925), he was raised in Birtle. After graduating from high school in 1944, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was transferred to the Army for infantry training. After the Second World War, he attended the University of Manitoba, receiving a BSc degree. He worked at Air Force weather stations across Canada and received a Masters degree in meteorology from the University of Toronto in 1960. He served as Director General of Field Services in the Atmospheric Environment Service and spent three years as Deputy Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, based at Geneva, Switzerland, until retirement in 1987. On 10 November 1949, he married Marjorie Bernice Hacking (?-1980) and they had four children. He died at Guelph, Ontario on 23 February 2023.
