Boot and shoe merchant.
Born at Bowmanville, Ontario around 1862, son of John Smale and Grace Dawe, brother of William Isaac Smale, he came to Winnipeg in 1881 and opened a boot and shoe store. On 17 August 1893, he married Elizabeth Bain (1859-1944), sister of Donald H. Bain. They had four children: Helen Ella Smale (1894-1894), Vera Elizabeth Smale (1895-1975), Erma Helen Smale (1896-1966), and Albert James Bain Smale. Dying of tuberculosis, Smale spent much of the last two years of his life in Colorado and California, returning to Manitoba shortly before his death, which occurred at his father’s home at Neepawa on 19 August 1899. He was buried in the Neepawa Cemetery.
