Memorable Manitobans: Harry Silverberg (c1906-1966)

Businessman, community activist.

Born in Russia around 1906, he came to Canada in 1929 and settled at Winnipeg. At the time of his death, he was the President of Silpit Industries Limited and its associated companies: Gunn Garment Limited, Canadian Sportswear Limited, North Main Drive In Limited, and Prairie Amusements Limited.

He and wife Sylvia Silverberg (c1911-2006) had two daughters. He was President of Rosh Pina Synagogue (1953-1954), Governor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, a board member of the Hebrew University, and a life member of the Board of Governors of the YMHA and Jewish Old Folks’ Home of Western Canada, board member of the national conference of Christians and Jews, and Commodore of the Manitoba Yacht Club (1959). He received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1962).

He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 15 August 1966 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
