Memorable Manitobans: John Scouras (1939-2007)

Restauranteur.

Born at Krokilio, Greece in 1939, he came to Canada in 1954 to join his brothers at Winnipeg. In 1957, they opened their first restaurant, Junior’s (later called VJ’s), then Big Boy (1958), and Red Top (1960). He and his brother Gun assumed full ownership of Red Top in 1970 and turned it into a local institution.

In 1971, he married Vicky and they had three children, including Peter Speros Scouras (1983-2017). He served as President of the Manitoba Central Soccer League and helped to build the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre. He was a President and board member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

He died at Sifnos, Greece on 21 August 2007 and was buried in the Waverley Memorial Gardens.
