Memorable Manitobans: Hope Fleming McKenzie Ross (1866-1942)

Cleric, journalist.

Born in Ontario on 6 December 1866, he received an Arts degree from the University of Toronto then came to Whitemouth as a student missionary of the Presbyterian church. There, he married Mary Minnie Ross (1867-1928, daughter of Charlotte Whitehead Ross) and they had a daughter, Edith McKay Ross.

The family moved to Winnipeg where he took a course in theology at Manitoba College. After graduation in 1891, he served as a minister at Morris, Grenfell (Saskatchewan), and later in Wisconsin. He became a Unitarian and founded the first Unitarian church in Winnipeg.

In 1903, he joined the editorial staff of the Manitoba Free Press and was initially assigned to the railway beat. Later, he served as financial editor and was President of the International Loan Company for 20 years. His final assignment was as church editor, which he held at the time of his death.

He died at his Winnipeg home, 120 Lenore Street, on 24 June 1942 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
