Memorable Manitobans: John Francis Evans “Jack” Robertson (1914-1973)

Born at Brandon on 30 November 1914, fourth of six children of pharmacist Wilbert Alexander Robertson (1881-1940) and Margaret Hanys Davies (1888-1969), he lived his entire life at Brandon. After obtaining a Pharmacy Diploma from the University of Manitoba in 1938, he worked with his father at Robertson’s Drug Store in Brandon. Upon the death of his father, he purchased the business from his mother and ran it for 30 years, initially at the original location at the corner of Eighth Street and Rosser Avenue, and later at 122 Eighth Street. He retired due to ill health. On 3 May 1939, he married Elizabeth Jean Patterson (1913-2005) and they had two sons, J. A. E. “Sandy” Robertson (1940-2018, husband of Sharon Downes) and D. M. J. “Jack” Robertson (husband of Carolyn Dawn Murray). He was a member of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Central United Church, and Brandon Lions Club (President). He loved sports and was a fan of baseball and hockey, having played both in his youth. He was an avid bowler and a Life Member of the Brandon Ten-Pin Bowling Association. He died accidentally on 10 June 1973 and was buried with his wife in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
