Memorable Manitobans: John Francis Evans “Jack” Robertson (1914-1973)
Born at Brandon on 30 November 1914, fourth of six children of pharmacist Wilbert Alexander Robertson (1881-1940) and Margaret Hanys Davies (1888-1969), he lived his entire life at Brandon. After obtaining a Pharmacy Diploma from the University of Manitoba in 1938, he worked with his father at Robertson’s Drug Store in Brandon. He retired due to ill health. On 3 May 1939, he married Elizabeth Jean Patterson (1913-2005) and they had two sons, J. A. E. “Sandy” Robertson (1940-2018, husband of Sharon Downes) and D. M. J. “Jack” Robertson (husband of Carolyn Dawn Murray). He was a member of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Central United Church, and Brandon Lions Club (President). He loved sports and was a fan of baseball and hockey, having played both in his youth. He was an avid bowler and a Life Member of the Brandon Ten-Pin Bowling Association. He died accidentally on 10 June 1973 and was buried with his wife in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
