Memorable Manitobans: James Alfred Roberts (1858-?)Farmer, implements dealer. Born in Suffolk, England on 27 September 1858, son of Henry Roberts and Lucretia Marshall, he was educated at Oxford then, in 1881, he emigrated to Canada and came to Manitoba in March 1882, settling on a farm twelve miles southwest of Neepawa. He operated the farm until 1892 when he sold out and moved to Neepawa where he started a business selling machinery and agricultural implements, in partnership with William Currie. The business closed in 1898 and, the following year, he entered the real estate and financial agency business. In 1885 he married Julia Ann Deakin of Wolverhampton, England.
