Memorable Manitobans: Otto Ritz (1867-1933)

Grain merchant.

Born at Hamburg, Ontario on 13 May 1867, brother of Henry Ritz, he came to Manitoba in 1885 and settled at Gretna where he was a general merchant. He moved to Humboldt, Saskatchewan in 1904 then to Winnipeg in 1915 where he worked in the grain industry, including a directorship in the McGaw-Dwyer Elevator Company, until retirement in 1930. He and wife Emma Walker Dawes (1882-1972) had two daughters: Lorene Frances Ritz (1907-1990, wife of David Milliken) and Olga Helen Ritz (1913-2012, wife of Fred Dennison Riley). He was a member of the Masons (Gretna Lodge) and the Wa-Wa Temple Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He died at his Winnipeg home, 353 Oakwood Avenue, on 22 September 1933 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
