Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Alfred “Alf” Raine (1897-1987)

Grain merchant.

Born at Winnipeg on 8 January 1897, son of Edwin Raine (1858-1904) and Ida Proby (1863-1931), he joined the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in 1911, interrupting his work to serve with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. Returning from military duty, he returned to the company and held the positions of Assistant Treasurer (1943-1952), Treasurer (1952-1960), and Western Manager (1955-1960) prior to retirement in 1960.

On 29 June 1921, he married Nellie Gertrude Dack (1898-1983) at Winnipeg and they had a daughter. He was a member of the Griffons Club of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Manitoba Club, Northwest Commercial Travellers Association, Niakwa Golf and Country Club, and St. Andrews River Heights United Church.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 17 September 1987 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
