Memorable Manitobans: William Edgar Pye (1858-1946)

Educator.

Born at Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia on 12 August 1858, son of William L. Pye and Barbara Ann Whidden, he moved to Manitoba by the early 1880s and attended the Portage la Prairie Normal School, from which he earned his Third Class Teaching Certificate (1883). He taught at Long Creek School (1884-1885), Bellafield School (1892), Hamiota School (1892-1893), Westbourne School (1901), and Sturgeon Creek School (circa 1905), and was Principal of Birtle School (1905-1906). While in Manitoba, he also served as President of the Western Teachers’ Association (1894). He went on to also teach in Saskatchewan, including at Winslow (1911-1916) and Nipawin (1921). He retired in 1925, having served over 40 years in the classroom. He died at Bible Hill, Nova Scotia on 11 January 1946 and was buried in Robie Street Cemetery at Truro.
