Memorable Manitobans: Joseph H. Prefontaine (1858-1937)
Farmer, MLA (1903-1907).
Born at Beloeil, Quebec on 21 November 1858, son of Hermenegile Prefontaine and Octave Beaudry, he was educated at the St. Hyacinthe College. On 10 January 1882, he married Georgenie Senecal (1864-1937) came to Manitoba and settled on a farm near St. Eustache where he raised horses and twelve children.
He served as Reeve of the Rural Municipality of St. Francois Xavier (1901-1903) and was elected to the Manitoba Legislature in the 1903 general election, being defeated in 1907. In later years he served on the council for the Rural Municipality of Cartier.
He died at Lisieux, Saskatchewan on 18 December 1937 and was buried there.
