Memorable Manitobans: William John Pinn (1874-1938)

Travelling agent, municipal official, educator.

Born at Glasgow, Scotland on 26 January 1874, he came to Canada in 1890 and worked briefly as a teacher in Manitoba, including at Bear Creek School (1896), Ayr School (1896), Preston School (1897), and Gladstone School (1897-1898). On 15 August 1906, he married Lilian Minnie Collins (1876-1955) at Gladstone and had four children: Mary Charlotte Pinn, Philip William Pinn (1908-1968), Lilian Pinn (1909-?, wife of Samuel Joseph Matthews), and Constance Annie Pinn (1913-?).

He worked 24 years as a travelling agent of the John Deere Plow Company, was President of the North West Commercial Travellers’ Association (1931), and lived in Gladstone where he served on Town Council (?-?), the local Board of Trade (?-?), and was on the Board of Stewarts of the Gladstone United Church. He died at his Gladstone residence on 7 October 1938 and was buried in the Gladstone Cemetery.
