Memorable Manitobans: Vital Basil Pidskalny (1921-2001)

Cleric.

Born at Ethelbert on 28 January 1921, his parents were part of the initial wave of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. Father Vital was a member of the Order of St. Basil the Great of St. Josaphat for 65 years, being ordained to the priesthood in 1947. He served as the superior of Basilian homes in Mundare and Edmonton, and as parish priest in Vegreville, Mundare, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg. In addition to this, he served from 1970 to 1982 as Provincial Superior of the Basilian Order in Canada, and in Rome from 1982 to 1992 as Vice General of the Basilian Order. He died at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 10 December 2001.
