Memorable Manitobans: Stephen Phelps (1948-2007)Artist. Born on 10 July 1948, he attended the University of Manitoba receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and a Master’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan. His first solo exhibitions were in the 1980s in Winnipeg and Vancouver. He returned to Winnipeg and was active in the arts community. He was a founding member of Artspace Inc. in Winnipeg’s Exchange District and the founding director of Main/Access Gallery. He was also a talented editorial writer, writing for Border Crossings magazine. He was a contributor to the Winnipeg Free Press editorial pages, writing mostly on government policy and the arts.
