Memorable Manitobans: William Reid Owen (1864-1949)

Hardware merchant.

Born in Gray County, Ontario on 25 November 1864, son of Alfred Owen and Annie Gimby, he was educated at the local public school. He began working at Owen Sound, Ontario in 1885 before moving to Carberry where was an alderman. He moved to British Columbia in 1898. He married Margaret Amelia Webb (1864-1941) at Owen Sound and they had three sons and two daughters. In 1911, the family lived at 2731 Westminster Road, Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a member of the IOOF and IOF. He served as the Mayor of Vancouver (1924). He died at Vancouver on 22 March 1949.
