Accountant, musician, community activist.
Born in 1950, younger of two sons of Edward Oswald (1907-1982) and Susanna Elizabeth Erbach (c1907-1998), he was raised in Winnipeg’s North End and lived his entire life in the city. After qualifying as a Certified Management Accountant, and later as a Certified Fraud Examiner, he spent most of his career at the Office of the Auditor General. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the OAG in 2007.
He was also active as a volunteer, contributing many hours, to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, including as President, as well as the Alzheimer Society of Canada. He was active with the Hospice Society of Manitoba and the West End Cultural Centre. In 1993, he was awarded the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation in recognition of his significant contribution to his community and fellow Canadians.
His love of music emerged as a young man and he spent several of his early years as a musician performing with his bands, the Pawn Brokers and Solar Rift Orchestra. Over the years, he amassed a significant collection of recordings, from classical and opera, blues and rock, to folk, and even “death metal”.
He was an avid fan of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and in 2007 received the Stained Glass Banjo Award, the Festival’s highest recognition of supporters of the annual event. The organization also established the Ron Oswald Fund for Young Performers, supporting its Young Performers Program.
He died at Winnipeg on 4 October 2007 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
