Memorable Manitobans: Parry Orestes (1910-1983)

Restauranteur.

Born at Winnipeg on 10 March 1910, one of seven children of Italian immigrants Frank Philip Orestes (1873-1938) and Maria Viola Bonomo (1884-1933), for many years he worked in the taxi and u-drive industry. In 1952, he opened The Paddock Restaurant and operated it with his son until his death.

He was married twice, first on 2 June 1928 to Margaret Mary “Peggy” McDowall (?-1979) at Winnipeg and they had two children: Frank Melvin Orestes (1928-2018) and Shirley Orestes (c1933-2005, wife of John LePage). In 1981, he married Mary “Molly” Armstrong (1927-2009). He was a member of the Masons (Northern Light Lodge) and Khartum Shriners. He received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1966).

He died at the Grace Hospital on 13 September 1983.
