Memorable Manitobans: Kenneth Rodney “Ken” “The Friar” Nicolson (1943-1992)

Sportswriter.

Born at Fort William [now Thunder Bay], Ontario on 27 January 1943, son of Malcolm Nicolson (?-1978) and Dolly Nicolson (?-1976), in his youth he was active playing football. He began a career in sports journalism in 1960 with CJLX Radio. He moved to London, Ontario in 1967 but spent only a year there before moving to Winnipeg to join the broadcasting staff of CFRW Radio. A year later, he moved to CJOB where he spent over 20 years covering all sports. In 1972, he became the voice of the Winnipeg Jets in their inugural year in the World Hockey League. He moved to CKY Radio in 1981 then returned to CJOB. In recognition to his service to sports journalism in Manitoba, he was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (1990). He died at the Grace Hospital on 31 December 1992.
