Memorable Manitobans: Melville “Mel” Neuman (1925-2022)Lawyer. Born at Govan, Saskatchewan on 4 April 1925, his family moved to Regina in 1927 and he spent most of his childhood there. After finishing high school, he ran his father's general store for a year until enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he was a radio mechanic. Returning from military duty, he attended the University of Saskatchewan, receiving BA and LLB degrees and a Gold Medal for academic achievement. Aftr receiving a Master of Law degree from the Harvard Law School, he returned to Canada and married Ruby Arron (c1931-1988) in 1951. They lived in Regina where they had three children and he practiced law. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1963 when he became a partner in the firm of Newman MacLean with Walter Carman Newman and George Campbell MacLean. Made a Queen's Counsel in 1969, he retired from Taylor McCaffrey in 2008. In 1988, he married widow Shirley Wasserman Shaen (?-2007). He moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 2016 and died there on 26 April 2022. He was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
