Memorable Manitobans: Douglas Raymond “Doug” Nepinak (1960-2005)

Playwright, editor, writer.

Born on 19 June 1960 to Jonas and Marie Therese Nepinak of the Pine Creek First Nation, he served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1979 to 1986, then graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English in 1993, after which he developed a career as a writer. He was a published poet and penned two plays, BBQ and Coocoosh. He served as an editor with Weetamah, Manitoba’s Aboriginal Newspaper, and made a significant contribution to the Native theatre and arts community in Canada. Together with his wife, stage and film actor Tracy Nepinak, he founded the Indigenous theatre collective As the Bannock Burns and was a dedicated member and co-founder of Winnipeg’s Aboriginal Writers Collective. He also served the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as its Communications Advisor. He died at Winnipeg on 13 August 2005. He had two children.
