Memorable Manitobans: Colleen Anne Helgeson Nelson (1932-2022)Artist, biologist. Born at Bismarck, North Dakota on 30 September 1932, daughter of Alvin and Burdella Helgeson, she was educated at the University of Minnesota (BA Music 1955), where she met husband Carl Robert Nelson, and the University of Illinois (MSc Ecology 1961). She moved with him to Winnipeg, living in Wildwood Park with their four sons and three daughters. She worked as a wildlife artist, publishing the book The Downy Waterfowl of North America (1993) as the culmination of 30 years of research. Her art is held in several public and private collections.
