Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Franklin “Frank” Neal (1879-1957)Wholesale grocer. Born in Utah on 20 September 1879, son of John Austin Neal and Ellen C. Stevens, he came to Winnipeg in 1912 and established the wholesale grocery business of Neal Brothers, in partnership with his brother William A. Neal (?-?), with himself as President and General Manager. In December 1925, they opened several retail grocery stores, called Neals Stores, around the city. On 19 September 1916, he married Clara Edith Horton (c1887-?) and they had two sons: Ross Horton Neal (1918-1989), and Grant Wilbert Neal (1924-2002). The family lived at 93 Canora Street and he was a member of the Winnipeg Kiwanis Club and Elmhust Golf Club. In 1956, the firm was dissolved and he retired to Victoria, British Columbia. He died on 22 October 1957 as a result of injuries sustained while he was walking and was struck by a motorcycle. See also:
