Memorable Manitobans: Maureen Margaret Murphy (1950-2023)

Singer, broadcaster.

Born at Winnipeg on 16 November 1950, second-oldest of five children of Claude Howard Murphy and Winnifred “Peggy” Coyston (1919-2005), she was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart School where she was active in the Glee Club. She and two sisters were vocalists with the band Sugar ‘N’ Spice until she left in early 1971. She later performed with the bands Shooter, Zdenka, LesQ, and Crowcuss. She lived in Toronto, Ontario for a time, returning to Winnipeg to work in broadcasting at radio station CJOB through the 1980s. In the 1990s, she co-hosted a morning radio show with Don Percy where she was known for her wit and sense of humour. She and husband Gerry Leger (1950-2011) had no children. In the early 2000s, she left broadcasting to move to Selkirk where she looked after her ailing father until his death. She died on 11 December 2023.
