Born around 1823, he first settled at Cypress River, later moving to Birtle then to Pilot Mound. He established several newspapers including the Manitou Mercury in partnership with R. H. Spedding (January 1885), Pilot Mound Sentinel (March 1889), and Cypress River Western Prairie in partnership with his son, Walpole Murdoch (?-?). He died at his home in Cypress River on 25 February 1899.
