Memorable Manitobans: John Alexander Murdoch (c1823-1899)Publisher. Born around 1823, he first settled at Cypress River, later moving to Birtle then to Pilot Mound. He established several newspapers including the Manitou Mercury in partnership with R. H. Spedding (January 1885), Pilot Mound Sentinel (March 1889), and Cypress River Western Prairie in partnership with his son, Walpole Murdoch (?-?).
