Memorable Manitobans: Elizabeth Margaret McDiarmid “Betty” Monthey (1924-2024)

Educator.

Born on 10 April 2024, she grew up on a farm near Helston. After graduating from Gladstone School, she attended United College and received a BA degree then worked at the Great West Life.

She married Herbert Gordon “Herb” Monthey (1922-2002) and they moved to Port Arthur [now Thunder Bay], Ontario and had three children. In 1956, the family moved to East Kildonan. As her husband’s health deteriorated, she returned to university and completed a teaching certificate and Education degree. She taught at Brant Consolidated School (1972) and in the Seven Oaks School Division, ultimately serving as Principal of Belmont School.

She died at Winnipeg on 14 September 2024.
