Memorable Manitobans: John Michael Mercury (1895-1990)

Community leader.

Born at Niata, Greece on 8 March 1895, father of Aristotle John Mercury, he came to Canada in 1919, visiting Winnipeg during the General Strike, and moved to Winnipeg in 1931, joining his brothers in business ten years later. He helped found the Greek community centre in Winnipeg in 1943 and the first Hellenic Greek Orthodox Church in 1956. He died at Winnipeg on 15 June 1990.
