Memorable Manitobans: Raphael Stephen Melnyk (1923-1990)

Cleric.

Born at Elk Point, Alberta on 17 October 1923, son of Harry Melnyk and Anastasia Melnyk, he joined the Order of Saint Basil the Great (OSBM) on 3 August 1938, and was the pastor of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (1958-1964) in Winnipeg. He would later become Provincial Superior (1982-1990) of the OSBM and move to Alberta, where he died at St. Basil’s Monastery in Edmonton on 13 December 1990. Burial was in the Basilian Fathers’ Section of the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery at Mundare, Alberta.
