Memorable Manitobans: Norman Alexander Matheson (1901-1985)

Businessman, municipal official.

Born at St. Louis, Missouri on 24 November 1901, son of Norman and Sarah Matheson, he moved to Redcliffe, Alberta in 1913. He worked with Beaver Lumber in Saskatchewan, managing various lumber yards prior to being appointed General Superintendent. In 1947, he moved to Souris where he owned and operated Matheson Lumber Limited until retirement in 1977. He and wife Vera Maud Matheson (1904-1987) had a daughter and two sons. He served as Mayor of Souris (1958-1959) and was a member of St. Paul's United Church, Odd Fellows, Royal Canadian Legion, and Kiwanis Club. He died at Souris on 7 September 1985 and was buried in the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery.
