Memorable Manitobans: Frederick McGregor “Fred” Marter (1886-1954)

Journalist.

Born at Gravenhurst, Ontario on 9 May 1886, son of Edward Carlton Marter and Jessie McGregor, he was educated at private and public schools, and the University of Toronto. He began a journalistic career with the Toronto World and, in 1912, moved to Saskatchewan to become telegraph editor at the Saskatoon Phoenix.

In 1913, he came to Winnipeg and joined the staff of the Telegram, moving to the Manitoba Free Press in 1916 as its telegraph editor until 1920 when he became editor of the Free Press Prairie Farmer. He held this position until retirement in 1946.

He and wife Delilah Maude Macklen (1881-1960) had three daughters: Grace Helen Marter (?-?, wife of Gilbert Hicks), Marjorie Eleanor Marter (1915-?, wife of Ronald Hugh McFarlane), and Doris Gwendolyn Marter (1919-?, wife of F. S. Bennett). He was secretary of the Winnipeg Publicity Committee of the Inter-Church World Movement and a member of the St. Andrews River Heights United Church.

He died at his Winnipeg home, 275 Ash Street, on 17 June 1954 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
