Memorable Manitobans: Fletcher Markle (1921-1991)Television producer. Born in Winnipeg on 27 March 1921, son of George W. Markle, he was active on the CBC by the time he was 20. He served in the RCAF, worked for the BBC, and in the United States became the producer of “Studio One”, the famous CBS television drama series of the early 1950s. He returned to Canada in 1963 to produce television for the CBC, and became head of television in 1970, introducing the “Beachcombers” and “Jalna.” One of his colleagues once commented that he had all the talents “except for the talent to make use of them.” He died in California on 23 May 1991.
