Memorable Manitobans: Johannes Magnusson (1852-1917)Farmer, municipal official. Born in Iceland on 10 April 1852, he came to Canada in 1874 and arrived at Gimli with the first settlers in 1875. He was a member of the Provincial Council of 1875 which directed the affairs of the colony of New Iceland in the first year of settlement. In 1876 he took a homestead in the Arnes district. He was Reeve of the Gimli Municipality (1888-1892, 1895-1896, 1900) and Secretary (1901-1908). He was twice married, first to Kristin Johannesdottir, and later to Kristin Sigurbjornsdottir. There was one child of the first marriage and sixteen of the second. He died at Gimli on 20 December 1917.
