Memorable Manitobans: Duncan Alexander MacGibbon (1882-1969)Economist, civil servant. Born at Lochabar Bay, Quebec on 12 March 1882, he attended McMaster University then he taught for two years at Brandon College. He left Brandon to attend the University of Chicago, receiving a doctoral degree in 1915. A teaching position at McMaster University was interrupted by service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. After his military discharge, he joined the University of Alberta as Professor and Head of the Department of Political Economy. He served on Royal Commissions in the 1920s and left the University in 1929 to become a member of the Canadian Board of Grain Commissioners based in Winnipeg. He held the post until retirement in 1949 when he accepted a part-time teaching appointment at McMaster University. He wrote two books on the Canadian grain trade: The Canadian Grain Trade (1932) and The Canadian Grain Trade, 1931-1951 (1952). He and wife Dorothy Curry (?-?) had two sons, Peter Richard MacGibbon and Geoffrey A. MacGibbon. He died at Hamilton, Ontario on 12 October 1969 and was buried at Dundas.
