Memorable Manitobans: Robert Love (1878-1956)

Businessman, community activist.

Born at Kincardine, Ontario on 23 May 1878, he came to Melita where he operated a shoemaking, leatherworking, and harness-making business (c1901-1939) and later an insurance agency until retirement in 1939.

On 4 August 1903, he married Florence Jane Brownell (1884-1963) in the RM of Cameron and they had three children: Robert Joseph “Bert” Love (1905-1989), Harriett Elizabeth Love (1908-1981, wife of Harry Blake Crothers), and Eleanor Mary Yvonne Love (1912-1968). He was an active member of Victoria United Church, being Superintendent of its Sunday School (1934-1946), and the Odd Fellows, serving as Grand Master and Grand Patriarch. He was also a Melita municipal councillor (1928-1929), clerk of the Melita county court, and Secretary of the Manitoba School Trustees Association (1926-1956).

He died at Melita on 9 February 1956 and was buried in the Melita Cemetery.
