Memorable Manitobans: Henry William “Harry” Lewis (1884-1976)

Physician.

Born at Hearts Content, Newfoundland on 21 December 1884, son of Welsh immigrant Henry Lewis and Annie White, he was practicing medicine at Melita when, in 1915, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in England, Salonika, and Siberia. After his military discharge, he moved his practice to Angusville where he was living when he was elected President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1927-1928). He later moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to take charge of a hospital there.

On 23 October 1912, he married Jennie Edna Cobb (?-?) at Melita and they had four children: John Henry Cobb “Harry” Lewis (1914-?), William Morris Lewis (1921-?), Betty Jean Lewis (1924-?, wife of R. Bryant), and Peggy Lewis (wife of A. Tanner). He moved to Victoria, British Columbia around 1969 and died here on 19 July 1976. He was buried at Cedar, British Columbia.
